High Fidelity is a novel about love and music. An unusual masculine view of love affairs, combined with the music that spices up life experiences.
The main character, Rob, is a thirty-something man who runs his own record store. When his girlfriend leaves him due to his childish behavior, he faces a mid-life crisis. He feels miserable and tries to analyze why his romantic history has been so unsuccessful . Then he decides to examine his top five memorable break-ups. ( He constantly makes top five lists about music or films with his friends-assistants in the shop ). And as a kind of therapy, he calls his former lovers and meets up with them to clarify why they dumped him. The result is a very wise and touching story.
Hornby exposes with humor and wit male behavior, their obsessions, and their tendency to avoid commitment and assume responsibilities such as having children or getting married.
In my opinion, it is a highly recommended book, very well written, funny and witty. I have enjoyed every page. Pop-rock music lovers should not miss it!
